The Department of Molecular Biology is one of the four research units of the Interfaculty Institute for Cell Biology (IFIZ).

The department is headed by Prof. Dr. Alfred Nordheim. Scientists of the department engage in both research and teaching in the field of molecular cell biology.

The research activities of the department are pursued within three Independent Research Groups (AGs):

AG Knöll ("Neural Gene Expression"),

AG Nordheim ("Vertebrate Gene Expression and Organ Function"), and

AG Proikas-Cezanne ("Autophagy").
