The 1st ISACBRST had been organized by the Institute for the History of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Peking, the Institute for the History of Science and Technology & Ancient Documents and the International Institute of Sinology, both at Tsinghua University Peking, as well as the Study Group for the History and Philosophy of Chinese Science and Technology at Technische Universität (TU) Berlin. It was held in Zibo, Shandong, in 1996.
The 2nd Symposium took place in 1998 at TU Berlin in the framework of the 8th International Conference on the History of Science in China. The organizing institutions were the Study Group for the History and Philosophy of Chinese Science and Technology at TU Berlin in collaboration with the Institute for the History of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Under the general topic "Historical Foundations and New Ideas", the 3rd Symposium will feature contributions concerning traditional Chinese source materials on science and technology as well as "modern classics" written after Christian missionaries had introduced Western scientific and technological concepts. The field of traditional Chinese science is constituted of mathematics, mathematical harmonics, geomantics and physical studies, medicine and pharmacology, alchemy, astronomy and astrology; traditional technologies include agriculture, spinning and weaving, mining and metallurgy, civil engineering, printing, the manufacture of paper, ceramics and porcelain, as well as a number of other production sectors.

As perspectives of research, we suggest Relations between texts and artefacts
Tradition and formation of canons of technical, scientific, and medicinal records
Text and illustration in technical records, and depiction of scientific and medical processes
Text traditions in specific fields of sciences, technology, and medicine, and the social value attached to them
 Problems of technical terminology
Intercivilisational encounters in the fields of science, technology, and medicine
"Modern classics" in the history of sciences, technology, and medicine

Moreover, the conference will highlight a workshop on "Handicraft Regulations (jiangzuo zeli): Theory and Application".
New research activities focusing on this source type will be presented together with an introduction of the latest reprint publications of handicraft regulations.
