Short history of Biomathematics in Tübingen

The biomathematics group started in 1971 as Lehrstuhl für Biomathematik within the department of Biology in close cooperation with biological cybernetics and genetics. Soon it also joined the department of mathematics.

Over a period of 35 years there has been a great variety of research areas covered by members of the group:

  • Spatial spread and reaction diffusion equations
  • Transport equations in biological modelling
  • Dynamical systems with quiescent phases
  • Delay equations
  • Modelling infectious diseases
  • Optimal vaccination policies
  • Structured population models
  • Prediction of proteolytic activity (proteasome)
  • Particle based modelling (cellular automata, interacting particle systems)
  • Granular matter theory

With the retirement of Profesor K. P. Hadeler in 2005 the biomathematics group was discontinued.

25 students have completed their Ph.D., to 8 the Habilitation has been conferred, and numerous students have obtained master degrees (Diplommathematiker, Staatsexamen für das höhere Lehramt).
