As the interface
between the sensory periphery and the higher cortical areas, primary
sensory
cortical areas translate the sensory information in information
interpretable
to the brain. Functional and anatomial reorganization in this interface
induced
by central or peripheral lesions might impair these translation
processes
leading to misinterpretations by the brain. As a consequence, the
communication
between primary sensory and higher cortical areas has to be
recalibrated. The
main aim of our group is to study the principles underlying cortical
reorganization and to find solutions to manipulate the plastic
processes
recalibrating the brain in a healthy manner.
As scheduled by the Volkswagen-Stiftung, funding of this group has
expired in 2004
after 5.5 years. On these pages you will still find information about
our
recent work. A detailed research report in German language can be found
on the projects-page
(for a PDF click here). A report
in
English language is under way.
