Within the Department of Geography of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the 'Laboratório de Gestão do Território' (LAGET) is a section concerned with questions of development planning. It was founded in 1987 and consists of a group of scientists - PhD; MSc, master students, students - headed by Prof. Dr. Bertha K. Becker. The LAGET team deals with topics investigating the correlation between technological standards, ecological framework conditions and spatial structures in Brazil. At present, several research projects are focusing on the examination of current processes of regional development intending to develop and disseminate techniques of development planning adapted to national framework policies. The evaluation of public policies and private initiatives influencing regional development is of particular interest for them. The application of GIS-methods serves as an important instrument for the evaluation and organisation of environmental and technological development in different regions.

Within the framework of the LAGET research projects, which are partly carried out in co-operation with other Brazilian and foreign institutions, the following topics and regions have been in the focus of interest within recent years:
  • urbanisation as the technical and strategic basis for regional planning: support of the economic-ecological zoning in Amazonia
  • evaluation of the ecological-technical development of production systems in the mid Paraíba de Sul valley with the help of Geographical Information Systems
  • logistic of sustainable development in Brazil
  • significance of border areas for regional integration in South America
  • analysis of social, economic and political consequences of measures of sustainable development in Amazonia
  • · alternatives of sustainable development and tendencies of socio-spatial mobility in Amazonia
