English at Work: Working for the University
The Fachsprachenzentrum (Language Learning Centre) has been offering courses for employees at the university since 2002 (regularly for English and sometimes for French). Since 2009, thanks to an initial request from Ms Erhard (Beauftragte für Chancengleichheit), the Language Learning Centre has also been offering English to an even more specific group: English for secretaries and administrative personnel. This summer semester the fourth course in the programme called English at Work II, was held each Tuesday from 8.30-10am. The course dealt with writing emails and business letters, telephoning as well as building confidence in speaking the language. In addition, a request made by Christiane Adler, a participant on the course, to have a look at the personnel form was addressed. The participants expressed their need to be able to explain the form in English to their non-German speaking colleagues. As a group this need was tackled head on, and the successful outcome of this small project can be seen on the left:
A special thanks to Irene Gust for dedicating time outside of the course to format the personnel form, and of course to the participants: C. Adler, M. Baur, S. Bürger, E. Dietz, A. Evers-Bischoff, S. Frank, I. Gust, E. Nerz, M. Neu, S. Ott, B. Rochier, A. Wiglusch, A. Wruck.
