Evolution and Ecology in BSc Biology

How you build a focus on evolution and ecology within your BSc Biology program:

Undergraduate Course (1st + 2nd academic year)

In the undergraduate course you will learn about the organismic diversity in the compulsory modules offered by EvE. You will understand how intra- and inter-species variation leads to evolutionary adaptions.

Construction and function of
plants and animals

(1st semester)

Pedigree and blueprints of animals and plants in the context of ecological adaptations, evolution of organismic major groups.

Botany
(2nd semester)

Evolution, morphology and structural diversity using the example of important plant groups, their adaptive meaning and phylogeny. Knowledge of native flora.

Zoology
(2nd semester)

Morphology, ecology and structural diversity of the major groups of the animal kingdom in the context of their phylogeny. Native fauna. Practical exercises on blueprints.

Ecology and Biodiversity I
(4th semester)

Variation as the basis for evolutionary as well as ecological adaptations. Methodical approaches to scientific research on biological systems.

Ecology and Biodiversity II
(4th semester)

Physiological ecology and system ecology of animals as well as scientific foundations of environment and nature conservation. Biological interactions.

Specialization year (3rd academic year)

In order to deepen your focus, you can choose from a wide range of required elective modules. Please check the currenty offered modules in Alma. Interdisciplinary method modules (e.g. biostatistics, laboratory work techniques or electron microscopy) complete this offer. The following selection is an example:

Human impact

Anthropogenic influences on organisms and ecosystems, e.g. concerning environmental chemicals (ecotoxicology), climate change or the importance of useful plants.

Evolutionary adaptations

Conceptual and methodical approaches, e.g. in behavioral biology, bionics, morphology, plant ecology or visual ecology.

Field ecology

Knowledge of species, habitats and methods for field-working biologists with the main emphasis on botany and zoology with a broad range of local as well as international excursions.

Taxonomy and systematics

Acquirement of in-depth knowledge of the diversity of individual animal or plant groups as well as modern methods of comparative systematics.
