Welcome to the Website of the Department for Indology
Tübingen's Indology Department was founded in 1856 and today deals with the history, culture and languages of the Indian subcontinent. In addition to the emphasis on the languages Hindi and Sanskrit, Tübingen Indology is distinguished by its focus on southern India, especially the region of Kerala and the language Malayalam ("Gundert Chair"). By revealing the roots of today's thinking and behaviour, which often reach far back into the past, Indology makes a significant contribution to understanding the current political, social and economic situation.
As a "small subject" we offer an excellent learning atmosphere and are in active exchange with institutions in India and other subjects working on India in Tübingen such as Ethnology. In the field of International Economics, we have an agreement with the Department of Economics on a joint study programme.
