Botanical Gardens

Information for visitors

As early as the 16th century, a botanical garden was founded in the old part of Tübingen by the famous doctor and botanist Leonhart Fuchs. Over the years of its existence, the location of the later "Hortus medicus", changed several times. From 1806 to 1809 the botanical garden was established near the city center and was used by scientists and students of the University of Tübingen for more than 150 years. Even today, now a park, this largely deconstructed former garden is referred to as the "Old Botanical Garden". This park is a welcome green space in the old town and popular leisure space for students of the nearby university buildings.

Since 1969, the diversity of plants can be experienced at the Morgenstelle Campus. The Botanical Garden now covers an area of 10 hectares; there are about 10.000 plant species from five continents, arranged according to geographical, ecological, plant family and thematic aspects.

The Botanical Garden continues to play its important role in teaching and research for the university. It is serving many visitors as a place of rest and relaxation, furthermore offering public education by providing a varied program of events throughout the year.
