Project description:
The joint research project "BaSiD" aims at developing a barometer to evaluate objectivized and subjective security in Germany. The research project intends to create a barometer to measure objective and subjective security in Germany. Because security is a complex, emotional, and normatively charged term, the BaSiD (Barometer of Security in Germany) will adopt an interdisciplinary approach to study its various layers. Representatives from the academic disciplines of sociology, criminology, media and communication studies, psychology, law and ethics will participate in the project. Further information on the collaborative project can be found on the website of the Max-Planck Institute for foreign and international criminal law.
With the project "Ethics and Theory" the IZEW is responsible for modules 1 and 8 within the framework of the collaborative project "BaSiD".
Module 1 concerns a theoretical and preliminary examination of the concept of "security". Starting point is an historical overview, which analyzes the development of different concepts of "security". Building on this basis, we will contribute systematically towards determining the epistemological differences between subjective and objective perceptions of security.
Module 8 addresses associated ethical issues and the normative assessment of technology used in the project (e.g., geo information systems). This module focuses on developing ethical expertise for the specific working areas of the BaSiD project as well as on recommending ethical guidelines for good scientific practice within the framework of a continued evaluation of security.
Funding:
The research project is funded by the federal ministry for education and research (BMBF), in line with the "research program for civil security".
