Research at the WSI
People at the WSI work on various innovative and advanced research topics in areas such as bioinformatics, computer graphics, or computer engineering.
Bioinformatics
Key research topics are genome sequence analysis and phylogenetic comparisons of genomes (Prof. Huson), proteomics algorithms (Prof. Kohlbacher), analysis of gene expression data (Dr. Nieselt), systems biology and chemoinformatics algorithms (Prof. Zell).
Graphics, robotics, media informatics
Computer graphics (Prof. Straßer) has been especially strong in Tuebingen for many years. Other key research topics are robotics (Prof. Zell) and media informatics (Prof. Schilling).
Embedded systems
Research on embedded systems concentrates particularly on development and their use in automotive electronics, medicine, and other technical applications (Prof. Rosenstiel).
Discrete mathematics and algorithms
Research in this area carried out within the discrete mathematics (Prof. Hauck), logic (Prof. Schroeder-Heister), and theoretical computer science (Prof. Lange) groups provides the basis for algorithms in bioinformatics (Prof. Huson), proteomics (Prof. Kohlbacher), graph algorithms (Prof. Kaufmann), verification methods (Prof. Küchlin), and evolutionary algorithms (Prof. Zell).
Machine learning
Machine learning (Prof. Kohlbacher, Prof. Rosenstiel, Prof. Schilling, Prof. Zell) is also a key research topic at the WSI in Tuebingen – in all groups listed here there are past and ongoing PhD theses and research projects in this area, especially regarding the application of modern kernel algorithms such as string and graph kernels, graphical models or Gauss processes.
Hardware, software, and protocol verification
Another key research topic at the WSI is the verification of large informatics systems, in particular verification of hardware (Prof. Kropf, Prof. Rosenstiel, Prof. Lange) and of software (Prof. Klaeren, Prof. Küchlin).
For these key research topics, the WSI groups have succeeded in obtaining substantial external funding; in addition, there are publications in highly respected journals and conferences centering on these research topics. The WSI groups carry out both basic and applied research on these topics.
