Short description of the study programme
The Master of Science Mathematics study programme is a scientific-research-oriented programme, consecutive to the Bachelor of Science Mathematics, which prepares students for work in research and university teaching as well as for work in business and industry. A specialty of the master's program is the combination of a broad range of mathematics with simultaneous deepening in a selected mathematical field. Graduates acquire in-depth knowledge of several different areas of mathematics and mathematical modeling, and they specialise in a selected area to the extent that they can deal with current research questions. For this purpose, the department offers a wide range of courses in the following five majors, which are derived naturally from the research priorities represented in the department:
- Algebra and Geometry
- Analysis and Differential Geometry
- Mathematical Physics
- Numerical Mathematics and Optimisation
- Stochastics
In the free elective section, the programme offers students the opportunity to either delve deeper into individual areas of mathematics and thus position themselves specifically for a subsequent PhD in mathematics, or alternatively to take modules from other departments to the extent of a usual minor subject and to study depending on the choice made, to qualify for professional fields outside the university area.
The exams take place during the course of study, as a rule, in the lecture-free period ("semester break"), partly in the form of written exams, partly in the form of oral exams, partly also through alternative forms of examination.
The course is characterized by the great freedom of choice and flexibility. From the very beginning, the students are accompanied by a personal mentor from the departments's faculty, who are available to help them organise their studies with an individual study and examination plan. For further information, the department's counceling office and the Dean of Study Affairs are available to students.
