Applied English Linguistics (Chair: Prof. Dr. Kurt Kohn)

Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of research and practice, investigating the theoretical and practical cross-roads of language and communication.

Applied Linguistics tries to find answers to questions such as:

  • How can language best be taught and learnt?

  • How do people successfully communicate with each other in a situation?

  • How is language related to society and identity?

  • How can language use in all of these domains be described and analyzed?

  • How do new technologies or Web 2.0 tools shape communication and how can computer-mediated communication (CMC) be characterized?

Amongst its traditional core areas are those of foreign language learning and language pedagogy (for English, specifically, TESOL), bilingualism, conversation or discourse analysis, and, of course, pragmatics. Other related areas are such fields as sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, or intercultural communication.

The Applied English Linguistics group at the University of Tübingen focuses on:

  • Foreign language learning & teaching

  • English as a lingua franca (ELF)

  • Pedagogic corpora, e-learning
    and CALL

  • Intercultural communication

  • Bilingual education (CLIL)

  • Translation and interpreting

Our course programme offers courses in these areas and teaching focuses on issues at the discourse level.

The Applied English Linguistics group closely cooperates with the Steinbeis Transfer Center Sprachlernmedien / Language Learning Media. Based on the authoring tool Telos Language Partner and the open source e-learning platform Moodle, the Steinbeis Center offers integrated e-learning and blended language learning solutions for schools, universities, adult education and companies.
