German Science Council Rates Tübingen English Studies “Outstanding.”
Research very strong in Tübingen’s English and American Studies
The German Council of Science and Humanities has released its new research ratings for the disciplines of English and American Studies at 60 institutions of higher education. In a pilot project this year applied for the first time to a Humanities subject, the study evaluated three areas: English linguistics, English literature and cultural studies, and American studies. At the University of Tübingen, all three attained assessments of “very good” to “outstanding” under nearly all the criteria – placing them among the best in their category nationally. Research in these areas was seen as very strong in Tübingen – reconfirming the success of the University’s commitment to research and the promotion of junior researchers.
The German Science Council rated the disciplines on four main categories: quality of research, reputation, ease of research, and transfer to interested parties outside the university. The evaluation reflects the use of more highly-refined criteria than previous evaluations, and combines qualitative with quantitative data.
University of Tübingen President Bernd Engler – himself a Professor of American Studies – said he was pleased: “The very good results for Tübingen’s English and American Studies are confirmation of the high quality and outstanding performance of these areas. This confirmation is all the more welcome because the Science Council’s new evaluation process has been very carefully and methodically developed.”
