University of Tübingen launches refugee course

Two semester of intense language & intercultural training will prepare new arrivals for studies in Germany

The University of Tübingen launches a specially designed course for refugees in the coming winter semester. It is a preparatory program aiming to help refugees get ready for regular studies at a German university. The nine-month course includes intensive language training so that participants will be able to take the university entrance language test (DSH). The first semester will also outline German history, politics and society, cultural values and intercultural training. In the second semester, there will be an introduction to various fields of academic study. Participants will be guided by local students as part of a buddy program. Non-academic activities, such as excursions and cooking together, are planned for the buddies, both as a group and one-to-one.

Participation is free for the 20 refugees who join the course in its inaugural year. The participants must meet university entrance requirements for Germany, have a level B1 certificate in German as a foreign language and refugee status. Applicants must include a cover letter describing their motivation for taking the course as well as their personal background and academic plans for the future. While taking the course, participants may apply for a regular study place in their chosen subject for the following winter semester of 2017-18. The refugee course is part of the support for refugees offered at the University of Tübingen: Refugees/ asylum-seekers may register as guest students, join a mentoring program, and/or take part in a language tandem exchange with students. For instance, the Center of Islamic Theology and the Faculty of Catholic Theology have initiated a joint course - Religion in the Secular Society - which is open to refugee guest students. There are also special introductory courses in Chemistry and Mathematics this summer semester. Details at:
