Public Outreach and Knowledge Transfer

In order to make our work and current research accessible to a broad audience, a number of public outreach activities and events are realized within the SFB 833:

 

Events and Talks:

TÜFFF ('Tübinger Fenster für Forschung')

Project B4 at the Tübinger Fenster für Forschung 2017

The TÜFFF (‘binger Fenster für Forschung’) is a welcome opportunity to show our research to a larger audience. At the TÜFFF Tübingen researchers from different areas present their findings through a range of formats, i.e. talks, posters, games and information desks. Multiple SFB projects have participated each time since the beginning of the TÜFFF in 2014. For example, in 2017, project B4 participated by conducting an interactive experiment and informed the audience about the question “how we understand languages“.

Science Pub Tübingen

In October 2015, Prof. Dr. Sam Featherston (C6) presented our work at the Science Pub Tübingen, an initiative organized by the Deutsches Jungforschernetzwerk (juFORUM e.V, a German network of young researchers) in collaboration with the University’s Forum Scientiarum. The Science Pub events provide an unconventional environment in which a diverse audience of students, researchers and interested members of the public can be reached.

Children's University (Kinder-Uni)

The Children’s University is another welcome opportunity to engage the public, in particular children, in our scientific research. The Children’s University was initiated in 2002 by the University of Tübingen. Today it is a Europe-wide format, for which the Tübingen University received the European Commission’s Descartes Prize for Science Communication in 2005.

Schülerlabor (Science Lab for High School Students)

In corporation with the Regional Council Tübingen (Regierungspräsidium Tübingen: Section School and Education) as well as colleagues from the departments of Modern German Literature and Medieval Studies, the chair of psycholinguistics together with project B8 of the SFB 833 organized and hosted the Schülerlabor various times. The Schülerlabor provides an established extra-curricular learning environment to school pupils. They can partake in scientific work for one day or one week to gain a first insight into the university world and the scientific process in particular.

In 2016, the SFB 833 acted as a central coordinator in the organization of the DGfS-Summer School "Mapping Meaning: Theory - Cognition - Variation" (15.-26.08.2016)

Graduate Days (Graduiertentage):

At the Graduiertentage, hosted by the university’s Graduate Academy, Prof. Dr. Andrea Weber (B9), presented the work of the local ethics commission and Dr. Birgit Umbreit (Z1) explained the responsibilities of an SFB coordinator as part of the session on science management.

Our newsletter 'Nauklerstraße 35' appears regularly and is linked to the newsletters of major linguistics departments, e.g. WHISC (UMass, Amherst), Whamit! (MIT) and Newsletter Sprachwissenschaft (University of Konstanz).

 

Attempto

The SFB 833 also uses Tübingen University’s magazine Attempto to present the SFB’s work and research to the public. The cover story of issue 42 informed about the work of developmental psychologists at the Baby and Child Lab at the University of Tübingen and how researchers are exploring language acquisition in infants and children. In the article, Prof. Dr. Claudia Friedrich, one Project B9’s principal investigators, explains “how words enter the mind” and which findings she can gain from the results of EEG studies on language acquisition in children.

 

"Wie viel Körper braucht der Geist?" (FAZ, 31.08.2011)

In August 2011, the renowned German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published an article on "Embodied and Situated Language Processing" and the accompanying workshop which took place in Bielefeld, Germany. In the article, they also referred to the work of Martin Lachmaier, linguist and psychologist from Project B4. 

 

Contest “The topic of my dissertation in a picture”

In 2015, the university’s Graduate Academy asked its PhD students to present the topic of their dissertation in an image – in the form of a photograph, a collage or a sketch. Among all submissions, Marion Jäger (née Knecht), Project A7, was ranked 3rd.

In her dissertation “Focus Particles and Extraction” Marion investigates the syntactic features of focus particles in German and compares the results with focus particles of the English language. For this purpose, she collects examples of everyday language and performs language experiments with participants. The aim of her dissertation is to show which influence focus particles have on the meaning of sentences and how differently they can be used through the interaction of syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

 

„Mein Promotionsthema in einem Bild“ - Marion Jäger

Transfer Project T1:

The computational linguistic methods established in Project A4 are applied in the Knowledge Transfer Project T1 to develop an interactive workbook for English as a second language at high school level (“Entwicklung eines interaktiven Workbooks für den englischen Fremdsprachenunterricht für das Gymnasium”). Project T1 is supervised by Prof. Dr. Detmar Meurers and the workbook is developed in collaboration with the schoolbook publisher Diesterweg. Pupils, teachers, publishers, authors and researchers work closely together on this exciting collaborative project.
