B8: Position and Interpretation: Syntactic, Semantic and Information-Structural Constraints in Processing Adjuncts

The project investigates the grammar and processing of adjuncts. The main aim of the project is to gain new insights into the dynamics of meaning constitution during incremental language processing. The project is concerned with core questions of the B-area, namely the incrementality/globality of semantic processing and the relation of structure and process. On the basis of current accounts in theoretical linguistics, we will derive and test hypotheses with different experimental methods (acceptability ratings, self-paced reading, eyetracking etc.). We assume that the order and interpretation of adjuncts can only be explained within a multifactorial theory. We are interested in syntactic, semantic and information-structural factors. Our goal is a detailed theory of adjunct processing based on experimental evidence.
