How are tuition fees levied?
Legal basis
The information below is intended to outline the relevant law and the related procedures; the sole legally binding document is the Landeshochschulgebührengesetz des Landes Baden-Württemberg.
When do you receive the notification of tuition fees?
- International students usually receive the notification of tuition fees together with the notification of admission or following the application for enrollment / change of subjects / parallel studying.
- Students taking a second degree usually receive the notification of tuition fees following the application for enrollment / change of subjects / parallel studying.
When do you have to pay the tuition fee?
- If you want to study at the University of Tübingen and are not yet enrolled, you will receive an invoice after online-enrollment via the ALMA portal (https://alma.uni-tuebingen.de). Please save the invoice for your own records.
- If you are already enrolled at the University of Tübingen, you can view the tuition fee and any other fees via the ALMA portal (https://alma.uni-tuebingen.de). In order to re-enroll for the following semesters you must ensure that you pay the tuition fee within the re-enrollment period (15 January - 15 February each year for the following summer semester and 1 June - 15 August each year for the following winter semester). You can transfer the tuition fee together with the semester fee to Universitätskasse Tübingen. Please transfer the tuition fee (and the semester fee) to the following account only:
Recipient: Universitätskasse Tübingen |
Bank: Baden-Württembergische Bank AG |
BIC/SWIFT-Code: SOLADEST600 |
IBAN: DE29 6005 0101 7477 5036 21 |
Please enter your student ID number as the purpose of payment. Nothing else. Thank you!
Do international students who take up a second degree pay twice?
No. International students pay a maximum tuition fee of 1.500 euros per semester. If there is an exception or exemption from the tuition fee of 1.500 euros per semester, then international students who take up a second degree must pay the tuition fee for a second degree, i.e. 650 euro per semester. Please note that there are also exceptions and exemptions from the tuition fee for a second degree.
How can you get an exception or exemption from the tuition fee?
- Along with your notification of tuition fees, you will receive information on the possibilities for exceptions and exemptions.
- If you wish to claim an “exception” from tuition fees, you have to complete the "Information Form for International Students" and send it, together with the relevant supporting documents, by post to Student Administration within two weeks after the issuing of the notification of tuition fees. According to § 10 paragraph (1) item (1) LHGebG the documents have to be submitted at the latest by the time of enrollment or re-enrollment. Moreover the deadlines for the refund of the tuition fee according to § 10 paragraph (4) item (1) and (2) LHGebG apply.
- Upon application, you can be exempted from the tuition fee for international students or the tuition fee for a second degree. According to § 10 paragraph (3) item (2) LHGebG, applications must be submitted before the beginning of the lecture period. Please use the applications available at "Forms and applications".
- Student Administration will check your documents and give you feedback.
In which cases may the tuition fee be refunded?
- If you withdraw your enrollment before the beginning of the semester.
- If your enrollment is terminated to immediate effect following the start of semester but within one month of the start of the lecture period. In this case you must submit both an application for termination of enrollment and an application for a refund to Student Administration.
- If a tuition fee was charged because, even though the requirements for a legal exception had been met, the requirements could not be documented at the time of enrollment or re-enrollment.
- If the requirements for a legal exception will be met within one month of the start of the university lecture period.
- If your application for an exemption from the tuition fee is approved.
