I am a physicist who has fallen in love with ecology. My general research question is how ecosystems respond to changing environmental conditions, such as global warming, increasing rates of invasive species or habitat destruction. Within this context, two aspects are particularly important to me. The first aspect is species interactions, such as predation or competition, which often influence the response of a target species to changing environmental conditions. The second aspect is long-term dynamics, where not only ecological but also evolutionary processes take place. I therefore use dynamic ecological networks, where nodes represent species and links represent species interactions, as a tool to investigate how ecological communities as a whole react to changing conditions and how evolution shapes these responses on long time scales. My background in theoretical physics and complex systems analysis allows me to tackle these questions from a rather abstract and generalizing viewpoint, leveraging mathematical tools and computing power.
