Welcome to the American Studies Program at Tübingen

New Publication: Von Selma bis Ferguson - Rasse und Rassismus in den USA. More here

American Studies at the University of Tübingen aims to understand the United States in all its complexity through the study of its cultures, history and society, as well as its interactions with other nations and peoples. American Studies is interdisciplinary, meaning that students use the tools and approaches from cultural studies, literary studies, sociology, history, political science, media studies, and other disciplines to engage with the American past and present. Crossing disciplinary boundaries allows American Studies to critically examine concepts such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, identity, values, and borders from different perspectives.

Students in American Studies develop the skills – critical thinking and analysis, research design and synthesis, academic writing and presentation – that will prepare them for a variety of careers in academic research and teaching, publishing, journalism, new media, cultural management, public administration, international organizations, consulting, and marketing and sales. The Tübingen-Stuttgart region offers excellent internship opportunities in most of these fields.

Founded in 1958, the American Studies program in Tübingen is one of the largest of its kind in Germany, yet small enough to foster a spirit of community and open-minded debate amongst faculty and students. The program frequently hosts guest professors from the United States and students planning to study abroad can benefit from long-standing partnerships with leading American and Canadian universities. The most recent evaluation by the German Council of Science and Humanities rated the research output of the American Studies faculty as excellent.
