Hello! Welcome to the homepage of the Sprachpraxis/Academic English Program at the University of Tübingen.

In Academic English courses, or Sprachpraxis, you get support on developing your language skills for better speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as develop your critical thinking and reasoning skills.  Our teaching is designed to make you a better, more independent learner, and one who is able to continue your learning, with or without us, in the years to come.   It is based on our years of experience teaching and learning second languages, and our professional degrees in our field (of English as a Second Language and Applied Linguistics).

EXEMPTIONS FROM/ALTERNATIVES TO L&U

Only eight exams are accepted as alternatives to L&U:


IBT (Internet-based) TOEFL test - minimum 88/120 points (88-96 = 4,0; 97-104 = 3,0; 105-112 = 2,0; 113-120 = 1,0).

Cambridge FCE, CAE and CPE certificates - all minimum of C grade (FCE: C = 4,0; B = 3,0; A = 2,0. CAE: C = 3,0; B = 2,0; A = 1,0. CPE: C = 2,0; A & B = 1,0).

IELTS (Academic) certificate - minimum 6.0 (6.0 = 4,0; 6.5 = 3,0; 7.0 = 2,0; 7.5 or better = 1,0).

 

UK A-Level in English (A = 1,0; B = 2,0; C = 3,0; D = 4,0)

US/Canadian High-school Diploma (A-/A (3.67-4.0) = 1,0; B-/B/B+ (2.67-3.66) = 2,0; C/C+ (2.0-2.66) = 3,0; D (1.00-1.99) = 4,0)

'Zweisprachiges Abitur' (Englisch) - average of grade in English and those subjects taught in English (15 = 1,0; 14 = 2,0; 13 = 3,0; 12 = 4,0)

If you have one of the above certificates, and it is less than TWO years old, please contact Stu Watts about having it accepted as an alternative to L&U. Please note: You must turn up in person, with the original certificate and proof of your identity (e.g. German ID card, passport, etc.).

 

Registration for courses in CAMPUS

Not all of you will get a place in the courses you would like to in the CAMPUS registration process. If you do not get a place in a Sprachpraxis course, and you would really like to be considered for a place, please do the following:

 

1. Don't panic!

 

2. Write an e-mail to the following e-mail address: sprachpraxisregistration(at)es.uni-tuebingen.de

 

with the following information:

 

- which semester you are in

- how many departmental seminars and Sprachpraxis courses you have already completed

- how many courses you have been admitted to for the following semester

- exactly which course you would like to take and a choice of several different sections of the course (please give exact instructor, day and time for each section)

- your matrikelnummer

-I have done PSI Literature, Language and Use, and Oral Comm I

 

-I have not been admitted to any other courses for the wintersemester

Please keep in mind that we do not handle registration for other course, only for sprachpraxis.  We will weigh all of this information and distribute students fairly, and that we will attempt to get everyone who really needs a place a place.  There is no rush; we will be dealing with these cases in August and send you an e-mail.

Sprachpraxis

DAAD Sprachtest / DAAD language tests

 

We provide the DAAD Sprachtest / DAAD language testing for students from all departments.  We do this in regularly scheduled appointments which are posted in the English department office. If you need a Sprachzeugnis / Language Certificate for the DAAD, please call, write or stop by the English department office and organize an appointment.

When you come for your test, please bring your DAAD form with you, already filled out.

How can I improve my spoken English?

If you would like more opportunities to improve your spoken English skills, then take advantage of the Tandempartner Program offered through the Internationale Sprachprogramme. You can stop by their office (Wilhelmstr. 9) and fill out a form, or you can print off the form from the following website and bring it to the office:

This is a great way not only to improve your spoken English, but also to meet native speakers of the language you are studying!
