Disease parameters

Fraction of hospitalized cases among untreated severe cases

In this section, the hospitalized fraction of severe cases is determined.

High risk fraction [%] gives the percentage of peope within each age group who are especially vulnerable to an influenza infection because of concurrent diseases or conditions.
Low risk group [%] gives the age group dependent hospitalization probability for severely sick patients who belong to the low risk group.
High risk group [%] gives the age group dependent hospitalization probability for severely sick patients who belong to the high risk group. The pre-set value of 7.768% for elderly indicates that about 7.8% of all severly sick elderly need to be hospitalized. Using the standard set of parameters, about one third of all infected individuals develop severe disease (irrespective of their age and risk group). This means that 7.8% of 33% (i.e. a total of about 2.5%) of all infected elderly need to be hospitalized.

Cross-references

As explained above, the hospitalized cases are derived from the severely sick cases.
Cases are only hospitalized after having sought medical help (which usually occurs some time after onset of symptoms).
Some hospitalizations can be prevented by antiviral treatment.
Hospitalization of severe cases does not per se influence their contagiousness.
Different isolation measures may apply to hospitalized cases and to severely sick patients who are taken care of at home.
In section case fatality it will be determined which fraction of hospitalized cases dies.

Output

Direct results of these parameter changes are depicted as the number of occupied hospital beds and as the cumulative number of hospitalizations.
