Antiviral Treatment

Treatment of extremely severe case

In this section, it is determined which fraction of severe cases who need hospitalization can receive antiviral treatment and during which time in the epidemic antiviral treatment is given.

Treatment fraction determines what fraction of severe cases who need hospitalization can receive antiviral treatment.
Range of days specifies the range of days during which antiviral treatment is available.

Cross-references

Setting the "Treatment fraction" and the "Range of days" alone does not guarantee any treatments.
Section ressources determines the size of the antiviral stockpile at the beginning of the epidemic. Treatments will only be given until the viral stockpile is depleted. .
Treatment is only given after a case seeks medical help. The waiting time between onset of symptoms and seeking medical help influences the fraction of severe cases who actually receive antiviral treatment.
Section treatment of severe cases determines at what time a fraction of severe cases who can be taken care of at home can be treated..
Antiviral treatment can reduce contagiousness and duration of the disease and thereby reduce the speed at which the infection spreads. The epidemiologic effect of antiviral treatment is, therefore, also influenced by the duration und average contagiousness of the disease.
If partial isolation of severe cases who can be taken care of at home is chosen, the reduction of the duration and degree of contagiousness after antiviral treatment can mitigate the isolation effect.
Antiviral treatment can prevent hospitalizations and thereby reduces the peak value of the number of hospitalized patients. As only patiens who are (or ought to be) hospitalized die in the program, treatment of extremely severe cases indirectly also lowers the number of deaths.
Some hospitalizations can be prevented by antiviral tratment, leading to more cases who will be taken care of at home. This has the side effect that the relative importance of partial isolation at home and partial isolation in hospitals change.

Output

The treatment of patients determines the curve of antiviral drug use and the corresponding cumulative curve and costs.
As antiviral treatment can help to prevent hospitalizations, it has an indirect effect on hospital bed occupation and on the corresponding cumulative curve and costs.
