Vector stages (L3) of Onchocerca volvulus

At the Institut de Recherche Medicale et des Plantes Medicinales (I.M.P.M.) in Kumba, Kamerun, Martin Eichner studied the development of Onchocerca volvulus larvae following intrathoracic injection of microfilariae in the vector fly. huts

As the source of infection, the number of injected microfilariae per fly and the exact time of infection were known, it was possible
(1) to attribute the exact ages to each developing larval stage.

(2) to determine length measurements which allow to differentiate the infectious larvae of the highly eye-pathogenic Savannah strain from those of the less severe forest strain, and from zoonotic filariae.

(3) to show that the decline in the number of invectious larvae per fly is not caused by a loss of larvae during sugar feeding of the fly (as was broadly assumed), but by increased vector mortality induced by the infectious larvae.
