Von 1968-1980 Lehrtägkeit in den USA an der Harvard University und an der Brown University in Providence.

Seit 1980 Professor der Sprachen und Kulturen des Christlichen Orients am Orientalischen Seminar der Universität Tübingen. 1985-86 Gastprofessur an der Universität Uppsala in Schweden. Mehrere Forschungsaufenthalte am Dumbarton Oaks Institute for Byzantine Studies (Washington) und am Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton).
