Databases on Materials,
Wages, and Transport Costs in Public
Construction in the Qianlong Era
Introduction
These
databases of prices,
wages, and
transport costs in public construction in the
Qianlong reign have been set up
in cooperation of the Seminar
für Sinologie und Koreanistik, Eberhard Karls
Universität
Tübingen,
Germany, and the Institute
for History of Natural Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.
The participants of our project group were Juliane Kiefner, Christine
Moll-Murata, and Hans Ulrich Vogel from Tübingen, and Chen
Chaoyong and
Su Rongyu from Beijing. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support
of the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)
and Max
Planck Gesellschaft zur Förderung der
Wissenschaften e.V.,
Germany.
First set up as database on the internet was the Gansu
edition of
Regulations and precedents on prices of materials.
It is a
manuscript of eight chapters and covers twelve prefectures and
sub-prefectures. The Zhili
edition of "Regulations and precedents
on prices
of materials" is the most
voluminous of all comparable
provincial statistics. The database contains more than 10,000
single entries. Newly added was the database
for Hunan province,
it is a manuscript fragment of 57 pages and has no editorial material
such as the Zhili and Gansu editions. Databases of other provinces will
soon be added. The editions we have so far collected and consulted, of
Zhili, Yunnan, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Shandong, all have the
same introductory memorial of the 20th day of the XIIth month of
Qianlong 33 (27/01/1769) and other editorial material, and apart from
very few variant characters, they are all equal. Chen Chaoyong has
punctuated these texts for the readers easier reference.
Please refer
to the Gansu
database
for editorial
materials.
