Juliane Kiefner pursues her studies of Chinese, sociology and economy at Tuebingen University. She spent one year at the Centre for Chinese Language at Peking University. She worked four years as an assistant at the Institute of Chinese studies, Tuebingen University, participating the compilation of a Union Catalogue of Qing Dynasty Handicraft Regulations in Chinese and International Collections then assisted the organization of the 3rd ISACBRST and the Workshop "Chinese Handicraft Regulations: Theory and Application" with Christine Moll-Murata at Tuebingen. At the workshop, Juliane Kiefner presented the paper "The Zhili Province Edition of Regulations and Precedents on Prices of Materials", being part of her masters thesis about Qing dynasty regulations on prices and wages in the state building sector. The data contained in "The Zhili Province Edition of Regulations and Precedents on Prices of Materials" she compiled into an Excel Database for easier use and reference. Databases of other provinces have been compiled by Chen Chaoyong (see "Guest Researchers") and his working group at the Institute for the History of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking.



Guest Researchers:

 Prof. Song Jianze

Professor Song Jianze, Associate Research Fellow at the Institute for History of Science and Technology and Ancient Documents of Tsinghua University, Peking, stayed at our institute in July and August 2001. He joined our group in the compilation of a Union Catalogue of Qing Dynasty Handicraft Regulations in Chinese and International Collections. This catalogue has been revised two times since. The latest edition was complemented by Professor Song's colleague from the Institute for History of Science and Technology and Ancient Documents, Professor Liu Qiang. Moreover, Song Jianze conducted research with Christine Moll-Murata at Tuebingen on "Qing dynasty handicraft regulations and precedents (jiangzuo zeli), with special focus on regulations on materials, working time, prices, and wages". Their joint article was published in Late Imperial China Vol. 23,2 (Dec. 2002). At the Workshop on Chinese Handicraft Regulations of the Qing Dynasty in March/April 2003, Song Jianze presented the paper "An Exploration of the Origins, Characteristics, and Research Situation of Handicraft Regulations".

Professor Su Rongyu from the Institute for the History of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking, stayed at our institute from February to April 2003. He continued the cooperate research on the database on prices and wages in public construction as reflected in the provincial statistics Qinding wuliao jiazhi zeli of Qianlong 33 (1769) and related texts. This cooperation was supported by the Max Planck Gesellschaft and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the Workshop on Chinese Handicraft Regulations of the Qing Dynasty in March/April 2003, Su Rongyu presented the paper "A Brief Introduction of Zeli: History, Compilation, Function and Disappearance".

 Chen Chaoyong

Chen Chaoyong, Assistant Professor at the Institute for the History of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking, stayed at our institute from August 2002 to January 2003. He set up a database on prices and wages in public construction as reflected in the provincial statistics Qinding wuliao jiazhi zeli of Qianlong 33 (1768) for Gansu, Shanxi, and Yunnan. His research focused on the prices of timber in public construction projects of the Qianlong era. It is part of the cooperation program between our institute and the Institute for the History of Natural Science, and will be conducted in the framework of the the research project "State and Handicrafts in Peking, 1700-1900". This cooperation was supported by the Max Planck Gesellschaft and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the Workshop on Chinese Handicraft Regulations of the Qing Dynasty in March/April 2003, Chen Chaoyong presented a paper on "Prices of Building Materials and Wages in Public Construction in the Qianlong Era according to Wuliao jiazhi zeli."
