DIE GRONINGER NEUEDITION VON STRABONS GEOGRAPHIKA, VORGESTELLT ANHAND DES ABSCHNITTES ÜBER TROIA

Stefan Radt und Jan Willem Drijvers

ABSTRACT

There is good progress on a new edition of Strabo, with translation and commentary' being prepared at the University of Groningen by a team embracing not only philology but also ancient history, archaeology and geography.2 The following example, an extract from Strabo's description of the Troad in Ch . XIII of the Geography, should give an impression of what may be expected from the new edition, whose publication is scheduled for the beginning of the new millennium.3 The principal aim is to establish the text on the basis laid down by A. Diller, taking into account the numerous emendations proposed by earlier scholars - suggestions often scarcely mentioned in current editions. The commentary is therefore at its most thorough in its treatment of text-critical and interpretative problems: to treat with equal thoroughness the innumerable historical, archaeological and geographical questions with which Strabo confronts us would be to delay unacceptably the completion of the work: the problems are therefore only briefly outlined with references to literature where the subject may be pursued in more detail. We hope that the new edition will stimulate more intensive study of these problems.
