The film "Troy / Troja" will be released around the middle of May 2004. This filming of Homer´s "Iliad", the first epos of the Occident, by Wolfgang Petersen has left its impact on the Troia Project: Indeed we were absolutely not involved in the conception or the realization of the movie, but television and printmedia have flooded us with questions about the reality behind the myth. This wave no doubt will continue when the public views the movie. For many of these questions we want to offer an orientation. Topics:
-
Televisiondocumentaries
Notice: Before
or after its release the Troia-Project will make no statements or commentaries
concerning the above movie. Quite general we are of the opinion that
archaeologists should pass no jugdement on this kind of film or on any
other manifestation of contemporary art (i.e. theatre, literature or fine
arts). This is the job of art critics. Above all we hope you enjoy the
programme !
Televisiondocumentaries: Several TV-producers have asked us for pre-production assistance for their documentaries which we given with he have given with the appropriate restraints. Among these are: BBC Horizon (Channel Two, UK), National Geographic Channel (USA), Discovery Channel (USA), History-Channel (USA), and Pro 7 (Welt der Wunder, Germany). The contents is only within our responsibility as it concerns interviews or written comments directly from the Troia Project. The 50 minute programme of BBC Horizon was aired on March 25, 2004 under the title "The Truth of Troy". We do not know when there will be a repetition.. A transcript of the programme is availble online under: <http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/2004/troy.shtml >. A part of the BBC programme was broadcast by the German Pro7 in the series "Welt der Wunder" on May 9. The 1 hour documentary of the National Geographic Channel : "Troy: Behind the Scenes" was transmitted in the USA on May 7, 8, and 15. A transmission date for Europe is not known. A release by the History Channel was adapted
by the German ZDF-series "History" and broadcast on June 20 unter the title
:"Troja - die wahre Geschichte".
