Hyphodontia alienata
(Lund.) John Eriksson 1958, Symb. Bot. Ups. 16(1): 104.
Select illustration:
Synonyms:
- = Peniophora alienata Lund. in Lund & Nannfeld 1994, Fungi exs. suec. n. 1043, Fasc. 21-22, p 28.
- Holotype: Sweden, Västergötland, St. Anggĺrden, Naturpark, on a log of Alnus glutinosa, 06.06.1940, leg. T. Nathorst-Windahl, Herbarium UPS.
- Isotype: Herbarium GB.
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, smooth, creme to ochraceous, margin thinning out.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 4.5-6 x 3-4 µm, ellipsoid, smooth, thin-walled, inamyloid, with one unsharp droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 14-25 x 4.5-5.5 µm, young clavate, mature cylindrical to suburniform, with one median constriction and a basal clamp each.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, up to 3 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- Tubular tramacystidia, up to ca 100 µm long, 5-7 µm in diameter. Walls with serveral layers, up to 2 µm thick. They arise from subicular hyphae. A part of ca. 50 µm which protudes the hymenium may be covered with with big crystalls not soluble in 5% KOH solution.
- Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. Basal hyphae thin-walled up to slightly thick-walled (< 0.5 µm), 3-6 µm in diameter, hyphae running loosely. Subhymenial hyphae 3-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled, loosely branched. Hyphal ramification by subseptal outgrowing or outgrowing of clamps.
Habitate and substrate:
White-rotted angiosperm or coniferous wood, e.g. Picea, Abies, Alnus. Also dead polypores may be used as substrate for fructification.
Biogeography:
In Europe, North America and Africa only a few locations are known. Therefore no interpretations on the distribution can be made.
Remarks:
H. alienata can only be distinguished from H. abieticola by its incrusted tramacystidia with multilayered walls and the different hymenial surface.
