Macromorphology:

Resupinate, smooth to grandinioid, white, yellowish or ochraceous, up to ca. 100 µm thick, margin thinning out. Colour photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), photo No. 76.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
4.5-5 x 3-3.5 µm, ellipsoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
15-18 x 4-5 µm, young clavate, mature suburniform with 1 to 2 constrictions and one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, up to 3 µm long.
Cystidia:
1. capitate cystidia, 5-7 µm in diameter, up to ca. 80 µm long, basal thick-walled (up to 0,5 µm). Young ontogenic stages without septa, older stages with up to 3 primary septa. The septa of the cystidia have one clamp each. The cystidia arise from the subhymenium, subiculum or from substrate hyphae with one basal clamp each.
2. Lagenocystidia with needle-like apex, basal slightly thick-walled (Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal and subhymenial hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to slightly thick-walled (

Habitate and substrate:

In the northern hemisphere on white-rotten coniferous wood: Abies, Picea and Tsuga. Burt (1925) also mentions Larix . In tropical areas the wood of Angiosperms is used as substrate. In Patagonia H. alutaria was found on Nothohofagus .

Biogeography:

The known specimens point to a world wide distribution. Nevertheless there is no H. alutaria or H. pallidula recorded in the Flora of the Thelephoraceae in Australia and New Zealand (Cunningham 1963).

Remarks:

H. alutaria easily could be mixed up with three other species: H. pallidula, H. alba and H. propinqua. All four species have septocystidia:

Septo cystidia at most 2 cells.............H. alutaria
Septo cystidia smallest 3 up to 4 cells
Spores longer than 6 µm.................H. propinqua
   Spores shorter than 6 µm
Spores smaller than 3 µm.............H. pallidula
Spores wider than 3 µm...............H. alba
