=Schizopora apacheriensis (Gilb. & Canf.) Gilb. & Ryv. 1987, North American Polypores, Vol. 2, S. 704.

Holotype: USA, Arizona, Santa Cruz County, Patagonien, on Prosopsis juliflora (SW.) DC., leg. E.R. Canfield, 11.12.1970, Nr. 180, Herbarium BPI.

Macromorphology:

Resupinate, hymenium irpicoid to poroid, cream-coloured, pores grow positively geotropic, pore walls up to ca. 2 mm high, subiculum, exclusively pores, up to 500 µm thick, margin white.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
5-6.5 x 4-5.5 µm, wide ellipsoid to subglobos, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
18-24 x 5-7 µm, suburniform, basal strongly ventricose, mostly with one median constriction and one basal clamp.
Sterigmata:
Four, up to 3.5 µm long.
Cystidia:
1. Thin-walled cystidia, basal ventricose, apical subulate up to cylindric, up to 50 µm longe, basal up to 8µm wide, thin-walled cystidia.
2. Thin-walled cystidia, basal ventricose, apical capitate, up to ca. 50 µm long, basal up to 6 µm wide.
Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 µm), hyphae loosely running, some hyphae are incrusted with little, up to 2 µm long, tablelike crystals. Subicular, subhymenial hyphae and hyphae of the pore walls 2-4 µm diameter, thin-walled. Hyphal branching by subseptal outgrowing and outgrowing of the clamps.
Pores:
Hyphae of the pore walls parallelly running. Hyphal endings in the pore margins thin-walled and sometimes incrusted with little, up to 2 µm long, tablelike crystals.

Habitate and substrate:

At the bases of still living or recently died bushes and trees in dry areas. Gilbertson & Ryvarden (1987) indicate a big number of substrates, also mentioning Prosopsis (Cactaceae) and Agave (Agavaceae).
Gymnosperms: Juniperus.

Biogeography:

The specimens of Gilbertson and Canfield (1973) are all from dry areas of the subtropic North America. Hjortstam (1986) recorded specimens from Argentinia.

Remarks:

H. apacheriensis sometimes could be easily mixed up with H. niemelaei or H. nothofagi . All three species have thin-walled hyphae in the whole fruit body together with caracteristical incrusted small, tablelike crytals.
They can be distinguished by the size of their spores:

Spores shorter than 6 µm, ellipsoid up to subglobos

Spores wider than 4 µm, subglobos.......H. apacheriensis

Spores smaller than 4 µm, ellipsoid.....H . niemelaei

Spores longer than 6 µm, cylindric.........H. nothofagi

Herbarium specimens:

USA, Arizona, Santa Cruz County, Patagonia, on Prosopsis juliflora (SW.) DC, leg. E.R. Canfield, 11.12.1970, Nr. 180, Herbarium BPI.
