- Neotype: Swede, Uppland, Bondkyrka, Vårdsätra, on wood and bark of fallen trunk of Salix sp. and Ulmus sp., leg. S. Lundell, 08.09.1932, Fung. exs. suec. n. 74, Herbarium UPS.

Macromorphology:
Resupinate, odontioid, white to yellowish , aculei up to 2 mm long,
apical a little fimbriate, positive geotropic growth, margin thinning out.
Coloured Photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), picture No. 77.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 4.5-6 x 3.5-4 µm, ovoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 15-20 x 3.5-5 µm, young clavat, mature suburniform with 1 to 2 constrictions and one basal clamp each.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, 3 µm long
- Cystida:
- 1. Capitate, cystidia protuding the hymenium, 5-7 µm in diameter, up to ca. 75 µm long. They arise from hyphae under the subhymenium. In young ontogeny stages the cystidial apex has no exsudat, older stages have a resin-like cap.
- 2. Lagenocystidia with tapering apex, which is incrusted with needle-like crystals, basal wall slightly thick-walled (Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. Basal and subhymenial hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to a slightly thick-walled (Aculei:
- In the center of the aculei thin-walled to thick-walled (
Habitate and substrate:
Mainly on decayed deciduous wood: Fagus, Betula, Ulmus, Salix, Acer. Also on coniferous wood: Picea.
Biogeography:
This species exists world wide in temperate up to tropical zones. Collections by Rick (1959) in Brazil, Furukawa (1975) in Japan and Wu (1990) in Taiwan are proved.
Remarks:
H. arguta could be mixed up with other species having lagenocystidia because of their long aculei. Specimens in the Fries herbarium named Hydnum stipatum were checked by John Eriksson and are determined as H. arguta. Hjortstam (1983) choosed a collectioin by S. Lundell made in1932 as neotype.
