Macromorphology:

Resupinate, odontioid, creme colored, margin thinning out, aculei very dense, up to 3 mm long, apikally strongly fimbriate. Very often aculei are confluent forming multiple tips. Tips of aculei somewhat darker than the rest. Color foto of fresh fruitingbody see Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), picture Nr. 78.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
4,5-6 x 3,5-4,5 µm, ellipsoid, smooth, thinnwalled, inamyloid, with one or several small droplets each.
Basidia:
12-20 x 4-5 µm, young clavate, mature cylindrical median with a slighlty constriction and one basal clamp.
Sterigmata:
four, up to 3 µm long
Cystidia:
Tubular tramacystidia, 5-8 µm in diameter, several 100 µm long, walls up to 2,5 µm thick, apikally thinwalled, apex optuse. The tramacystidia arise from subicular hyphae with one clamp each.
Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal hyphae 2,5-4 µm in diameter, thin- to slightly thickwalled (< 1 µm), loosely branched. Subhymenial hyphae 3-5 µm in diameter, thinnwalled, loosely branched. Hyphal branching by subseptal outgrowing or by outgrowing of clamps.
Aculei:
The center of the aculei is built by tubular tramacystidia. Generative hyphae are running parallely to tramacystidia. Hymenium is running straigt up to the tips of aculei.

Habitate and Substrate

Rotten deciduous wood in humid fertile forests with e.g. Corylus, Fraxinus, Quercus. Also on Pinus.

Biogeography

H. barba-jovis has been reported from all continents except Australia.

Remarks

H. barba-jovis can be mixed with H. abieticola. Both species are only distinguishable by spores, tubular tramacystidia, length of aculei and substrate:

           H. abieticola H. barba-jovis

Spores: cylindrical ellipsoid
           5-6,5 x 3-4,5 µm 4,5-6 x 3,5-4,5 µm
Cystidia: up to ca. 300 µm long longer than 300 µm
Aculei: up to 1 mm long up to 3 mm long
Substrate: mostly coniferous wood mostly deciduous wood

Hjortstam & Bononi (1987) remarked on his Brasilian collections the lack of clamps on septa which are located in the center of the aculeus. We can confirm this in our material. The lack of clamps could be interpreted as secondary septa.
