Macromorphology:

Resupinate, odontioid, cream-coloured, margin thinning out; without aculei up to 1 mm thick, aculei up to ca. 1 mm long. Colour photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), photo No. 79.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
4-6 x 3-4 µm, ellipsoid, smooth, thin-walled, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
14-30 x 3-5 µm, young cylindrical or clavate, mature suburniform with 1-2 median constrictions and one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, 3-4 µm long.
Cystidia: Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Hyphae 2-3 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to thick-walled (Aculei:
Endhyphae of the aculei can be obtus to subulate and show a characteristical incrustation of globose crystals (up to 5 µm in diameter). The basidiocarps are often infected with a hyphomycet (Denticuaria limoniformis de Hoog). The conidiophors of this hyphomycet are mainly in the top of the aculei.

Habitate and substrate:

Mainly on white-rotten coniferous wood: Pinus, Picea, Pseudotsuga, Juniperus. Seldom on Angiosperms wood.

Biogeography:

In the moderate areas of the northern hemisphere this species is very abundant. From subtropical to tropical areas only some records from the Canaries (Ryvarden 1976) and Africa are known. Wu (1990) describes and illustrates one specimen from Taiwan. The micromorphological characters fit very good to the specimens investigated here.

Remarks:

Vouchers from temperate areas show a uniform micromorphology, whereas specimens from tropical areas vary considerably. This variability concearns the incrustation, the length of basidia and cystidia and the cyanophile reaction of the hyphae. In tropical material the moniliform cystidia may be present in different number and are difficult to observe. It is absolutely necessary to use Phloxin staining to observe moniliform cystidia. The variabilty point towards a species complex which can not be divited by micromorphology. The illustrated vouchers show in the links show normal examples and extremes in respect of incrustation and presence of cystidia. In the investigated material many intermediate forms are present.
There are three odontioid forms with moniliform cystidia. Their spore sizes are overlapping.

Capitate cystidia present
Aculei very small, not more than 1mm long.....H. breviseta
Aculei up to 2 mm long, round to spathulate...H. spathulata
Capitate cystidia absent.........................H. mollis
