Hyphodontia crustosa
John Eriksson 1958
Symb. Bot. Ups. 16(1): 104.
Select illustrations:
- = Hydnum crustosum Fr. 1821, Syst. Mycol. I, S. 419.
- Neotype: Swede, Halland, . Karup, "Rivieraområdet", near Stensån (river), on bark of a cut Picea abies, leg. B. & J. Eriksson, 27.03.1948, Fung. exs. suec. Nr. 2145, Herbarium UPS.
- = Hyphodontia burtii (Peck) Gilb. in Petersen 1971. Evol. higher Basidiom. S. 300.
- = Hyphodontia albicans (Pers.) Parm. 1968, Consp. Syst. Cort., S. 123
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, young verruculose, mature odontioid, white, yellowish or creme-coloured, margin sharp, without aculei up to 300 µm thick, Aculei up to 100 µm high. Herbarium specimens often with cracked hymenium. Coloured photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), picture No. 81.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 5-7 x 2.5-3.5 µm, narrow ellipsoid to cylindric, rarely slightly allantoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 17-35 x 4-5 µm, suburniform with one to two constrictions and one basal clamp each, often basidial repetition.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, 3-4 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- Subulat cystidia, sometimes basally slightly ventriculose, apearing in hymenium and aculei (Eriksson & Ryvarden 1976: 633 "Cystidiolen"). These cystidia are very variable in their size and form. In some collections the cystidia have apically a little capitate to ellipsoid enlargement. The apex of the cystidia mya have a hyaline exsudat.
- Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. Basal, subicular and subhymenial hyphae 2-3 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to slightly thick-walled (0.5 µm). Because of additional, intern basidial repetition there are areas with many collapsed hyphae in the subhymenium, which makes it very difficult to analyze the hyphal structure. All hyphae can be incrusted with small or larger crystals, which are not soluble in 5% KOH solution.
- Aculei:
- Often constructed of gathered, subulate cystidia. Hyphae in the center of the aculei can be thick-walled (up to 1 µm), and have a diameter of up to 5 µm. The aculei are sterile.
Habitate and substrate:
Mostly on bark of deciduous and coniferous wood: Salix, Ulmus, Fraxinus, Populus, Quercus, Betula, Corylus, Picea, Pinus, Thuja.
Biogeography:
H. crustosa is knwon from holarctic, paleotropical and neotropical areas. Specimens of the tropical Brazil are from Hjortstam & Bononi (1987).
Remarks:
The distinction of H. crustosa and H. juniperi is quite difficult; because the cystidia can be very variable. The best characters for distinction:
Hymenium Spores (wide) Substrate
H. crustosa odontioid 2.5-3.5 µm deciduous and coniferous wood
H. juniperi smooth 3-4 µm Cupressaceae
