Macromorphology:

Resupinate, smooth to slightly verrucose or odontioid, white to yellowish, margin thinning out, aculei up to ca. 75 µm high. Coloured photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), picture No. 139.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
5-6 x 4-4.5 µm, ellipsoid, thick-walled (0.5 µm), smooth, inamyloid, spores walls cyanophil, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
15-20 x 4-5 µm, young clavate, mature suburniform, with one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, up to 3 µm long.
Cystidia:
Tramacystidia, up to ca 100 µm long, clavate, basally slightly thick-walled (0.5 µm), apically thin-walled. Basally up to 5 µm in diameter, apically up to 10 µm in diameter. They arise from the subiculum in most cases as a terminal cell of a kandelaber-like hyphal branching.
Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal hyphae thin-walled up to thick-walled (< 0.5 µm), 3-4 µm in diameter, hyphae running very loosely. Basal hyphae incrusted with crystals (diameter up to 5 µm), which are soluble in 5% KOH solution. Subhymenial hyphae thin-walled, 3-4 µm in diameter, very densely running.
Aculei:
Aculei are build of thin-walled hyphae in their center and at least one cystdium.

Habitate and substrate:

Often on dead plant parts of Pteridophytes: Athyrium, Pteridium, Dryopteris. Also on decaying deciduous and coniferous wood.

Biogeography:

From Europe there are several specimens known, but Eriksson & Ryvarden (1976) report that H. detritica however is quite rare in North Europe. Outside of Europe only a few sporadic distributed collections from North America and Nepal are known. The unusual substrate (see above) surely has an influence on the frequency of the records, because Corticiaceae mainly searched for on decaying wood.

Remarks:

H. detritica and H. nikolajevae are not able to be distinguished micromorphologially. Eriksson & Ryvaden (1976) proves the indentity of H. nikolajevae with the type of Peniophora detritica. After my own analysis H. magnacystidiata is conspecificous with H. detritica.
