Hyphodontia hastata
(Litsch.) John Eriksson 1958, Symb. Bot. Ups. 16(1): 104.
Select illustration:
Synonym:
= Peniophora hastata Litsch. 1928, Österr. Bot. Zeitschr. 77(2): 130.
Holotype: Austria, Tirol, bei Kreit, on coniferous wood, leg. V. Litschauer, 18.08.1919, Herbarium W.
Paratype: Austria, Tirol, Stubai, Obernbergtal, leg. V. Litschauer, 20.08.1924, Herbarium W.
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, smooth to slightly verrucose, white to cream-coloured, margin thinning out, up to ca. 200 µm thick.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 5-7 x 2-3 µm, cylindric up to long-ellipsoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 14-23 x 4-5 µm, suburniform, young with one mediane constriction, mature with 1-3 constrictions and one basal clamp each.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, up to 4 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- 1. Hastocystidia, up to ca. 50 µm long, median 5-7 µm in diameter, apically tappering, slightly thick-walled (< 0.5 µm). Apical they could be incrusted with resin-like exsudat, which is soluble in 5% KOH solution. They arise with one basal clamp each from the basal hyphae or also from the hymenium and subhymenium.
- 2. Moniliform cystidia, pearlstring-like constricted, up to ca. 50 µm long, 3-5 µm in diameter, slightly thick-walled (< 0.5 µm). 3% Phloxin solution dyes their content more than the surrounding hyphae. They arise with one basal clamp each from the subiculum, hymenium or subhymenium.
- 3. Intermediate forms of 1. and 2. occur. First the moniliform cystidium type is built, which, after 10 to 20 µm, transforms into the type of a hastocystidium.
Clamps: All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae: Hyphal system monomitic. Hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to slightly thick-walled (< 1 µm), loosely hyphal running in the subiculum. In the subhymenium densely hyphal running; there often collapsed hyphae can be found. Hyphal branching by subseptal outgrowing or outgrowing of clamps.
Habitate and substrate:
Decaying coniferous wood in temperate to subarctic coniferous forests: Picea, Pinus, Larix, Abies.
Deciduous wood: Populus, Acer. Calluna.
Biogeography:
The geographical distribution of the records point to a distribution in the northern hemisphere.
Remarks:
In the analyzed specimens moniliform cystidia are sometimes often and sometimes abundand and sometimes lacking. H. hastata could however be distinguished by their characteristical, tapering of the hastocystidia. This cystidium type is present also in H. hastifer, which is hitherto known only from Argentina.
Hastocystiden all over the hymenium............................H. hastata
Hastocystidia only stand in the sterile tops of the aculei.....H.hastifer
