Hyphodontia hastifer
Hjortst. in. herb.
Holotype: Argentina, Prov. Missiones, Iguazu Nationalpark, on bark of, leg. L. Ryvarden, 01.-05.03.1982, LR 19767, Herbarium K.
Paratype: LR 19819, Herbarium K.
Select illustration:
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, odontioid, white, margin thinning out, aculei up to ca. 300 µm high, fertile, apical fimbriate, without aculei up to ca. 150 µm thick.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 4.5-5 x 4-4.5 µm, subglobos, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 20-25 x 4-5 µm, young clavate, mature suburniform, with one basal clamp each.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, up to 3 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- 1. Ventricose cystidia with long extended tops, up to ca. 50 µm long, basal up to 5 µm wide, thin-walled, with one basal clamp each, only lokalized in the hymenium.
- 2. Hastocystidia, subulate, 40-60 µm long, 6-8 µm wide, only lokalized in the tops of the aculei, thin-walled, with one basal clamp each.
- 3. Capitate hyphal endings in the subiculum, apical up to 10 µm diameter. They secrate big crystalls, which are up to 25 µm big and not soluble in 5% KOH solution.
- Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. Basal and subiculare hyphea 3-5 µm in diameter, slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 µm), hyphae loosely interwoven. Subiculum strong incrusted with crystalls (see above). Subhymenial hyphea 3-5 µm in diameter, thin-walled, strongly branched. In the hymenium often collapsed basidia present.
- Aculei:
- Clustered hastocystidia build the aculei, which are totally sterile.
Habitate and substrate:
Only one specimen found on bark from a subtropical, moist deciduous forest in Argentina.
Biogeography:
Argentina.
Remarks:
H. hastata and H. hastifera are the only species in Hyphodontia with the special character hastocystidia. They could be distinguished by their spores size and form.
