Hyphodontia mollis

WU 1990, Acta Bot. Fenn. 142: 95.

Holotype: Taiwan, Kaohsiung, Liukuei Hsiang, Shanping, 770 m alt., on a fallen Angiosperms twig, leg. S.H. Wu, 14.07.1989, WU 890714-3, Herbarium TAI.
Isotype: Herbarien GB, H, S. H. Wu.

Macromorphology:

Resupinate, odontioid, ochraceous with a pink touch, margin thinning out, without aculei up to ca. 100 µm thick, aculei up to ca. 1000 µm long, at the base up to ca. 200 µm wide, in cross-section plug-like formed, often confluent at the base with neighbouring aculei, 4-7 aculei per mm.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
4-5.5 x 3-4 µm, wide ellipsoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
16-21 x 3.5-4.5 µm, suburniform mostly with two constrictions and one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, 3-3.5 µm long.
Cystidia: Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal and subicular hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, long cells, thin-walled to thick-walled (< 1 µm), very loosely ramified. Subhymenial hyphae 3-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled, strongly ramified.
Aculei:
Aculei built of parallely running hyphae, 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled, long celled, incrusted in groups with little crystals (hardly soluble in 5% KOH solution), hyphal endings obtuse. Aculei fertile.

Habitate and substrate:

Warm temperated to subtropical, evergreen mountain forests with a high rain fall. Decaying wood of Angiosperms.

Biogeography:

Until now only known from Taiwan.

Remarks:

Hyphodontia species with pearlstring-like constricted (moniliform) cystidia are easily mixed up. The frequency of moniliform cystidia varies in different specimens. For determination the capitate cystidia are very important, because they are lacking in H. mollis.
Capitate cystidia present
Aculei very small, at most 1 mm long............H. breviseta
Aculei up to 2 mm long, rounded to spathulate...H. spathulata
Capitate cystidia not present H. mollis
