Synonym:

= Odontia nespori Bres. 1920, Ann. Mycol. 18(1-3): 43.
Type: Czech Republic, Bohemia, on Quercus sp., leg. Bresadola, Herbarium GB.

Macromorphology:

Resupinate, odontioid, white to yellowish, without aculei up to 500 µm thick, aculei 100-200 µm high.
Colour photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), picture No. 83.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
4.5-6 x 2-3 µm, cylindric to slightly allantoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
15-30 x 3-4 µm, suburniform, with 1-3 constrictions and one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, 3 µm long.
Cystidia:
Capitate cystidia, sometimes a little thick-walled at the base (< 0.5 µm), 4-5 µm in diameter, apical with or without exsudat.
Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Subhymenial hyphae, thin-walled, 3-4 µm in diameter, not or strong incrusted with up to 4 µm big crystals, very densely hyphal ramification, subicular hyphae 3-5 µm in diameter, thick-walled (up to 1 µm), loosely hyphal ramification.
Aculei:
Hyphae 4-5 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to thick-walled (up to 1 µm), everytime strong incrusted with characteristical, up to 4 µm big, spherical-formed crystals. Aculeal end hyphae thin-walled, sometimes with secondary septa.

Habitate and substrate:

Montane coniferous forests with temperate climate. Substrate mainly conifers: Pinus, Picea, Tsuga. Also on deciduous wood: Alnus, Quercus.

Biogeography:

Central Europe, Carpathian Mountains, Jakutsk (Sibiria), North America (Gilbertson & Blackwell 1987). In Scandinavia rarely (Eriksson & Ryvarden 1976). It is remarkeable, that specimens from subtropical to tropical areas (Teneriffa, Africa, Taiwan) are restricted to montane areas.

Remarks:

Different characters of H. nespori are the thin-walled to thick-walled, obtuse and incrusted end hyphae of the aculei in combination with cylindric to slightly allantoid spores. Similar end hyphae of the aculei also are found in some other species:
Spores shorter than 6 µm
  Spores wider than 3 µm
Aculei up to 50 µm high.......H. rimosissima
Aculei up to 500 µm high......H. aspera
Spores more narrow than 3 µm....H. nespori
Spores longer than 6 µm...........H. quercina
Specimen FO 41697 from Taiwan has all characters of a typical H. nespori species but in contrast has a very small an tiny basidiocarp with small abnorm basidia.
