= Odontia pruni Lasch in Rabenhorst 1851, Fungi europaei exsiccati, Nr. 1514.
Type: on Prunus spinosa, comm. Bresadola, in Herb. L. Romell, Herbarium S, K.

Type: Herbaria S, K.

Macromorphology:

Resupinate, odontioid white to cream-coloured, margin distinct, aculei up to ca. 100 µm high.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
5-6.5 x 3.5-5 µm, ellipsoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
22-35 x 4-5 µm, suburniform with one up to two constrictions and one basal clamp each, often basidial repetition.
Sterigmata:
Four, up to 5 µm long.
Cystidia:
Capitate cystidia, 15-40 x 3-5 µm, with one basal clamp each. The cystidia arise from the hymenium.
Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled. Hyphae of the subhymenium may be strongly incrusted with crystals, which are not soluble in 5% KOH solution.
Aculei:
Hyphal endings of the aculei somewhat sinuose, obtus or slightly subulate.

Habitate and substrate:

In wet forests on deciduous wood: Prunus, Ulmus, Corylus, Acer, Alnus, Myrica.

Biogeography:

There are many records from Europe. Other specimens come from North America, the Canaries and the Chang Bai Shan in China. Malençon (1957) made a list of this species in his Flora of the Atlas mountains.

Remarks:

H. pruni could be mixed up with H. rimosissima. To distinguish those two species, the hyphal endings of the aculei must be analyzed very carefully:

H. pruni H. rimosissima
Hyphal endings tapering obtuse
in the aculeus

For a long time the interpretation of H. bugellensis and H. pruni was not exactly clear. Eriksson & Ryvarden (1976) took both names as synonyms, while Hjortstam (1991) demands a clear separation because of the different spore morphology. He gave the following characters for distincton:

H. bugellensis H. pruni
Spores size: (5-)5.5-6(-6.5) x 3.5-4 µm up to 6.5-7 µm long
Spores walls: clearly thick-walled thin-walled
Distribution: Southern Europe Northern Europe

In the analyzed specimens of this study these differences could not be verified. Because of this I follow the concept of Eriksson und Ryvarden and synonymize H. bugellensis with H. pruni.
