Synonyms:
- = Odontia rimosissima Peck 1897, N.Y. State Mus. Rep. 50: 114.
- Holotype: USA, New York, Snow Lake, on Alnus incana, leg. C.H. Peck, in Herb C.H. Peck, Herbarium NYS.
- = Hyphodontia papillosa (Fr.) John Eriksson 1958, Symb. Bot. Ups. 16(1):104.
- = Grandinia papillosa Fr. p.p. 1874, Hym. Eur, p. 626
- Typus: No authentic material known (fide Eriksson & Ryvarden 1976: 682).
- = Hyphodontia verruculosa John Eriksson & Hjortst in Eriksson & Ryvarden 1976, The Corticiaceae of North Europe, Vol. 4., p. 681.
- Holotype: Swede, Västergötland, Österplana par., Kinekulle, south of the church, on Corylus avellana, leg. K. Hjortstam, 11.10.1969, Hjm 3116, Herbarium GB.
- Paratype: Swede, Västergötland, Högstena, southern part of the Plantaberget, on Fraxinus excelsior, leg. K. Hjortstam, 07.10.1969, Hjm 3042, Herbarium GB.
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, finely verruculose to odontioid, cream-coloured up to beige with a slightly orange touch, margin distinct, without aculei up to ca. 50 µm thick, aculei up to ca 50 µm high.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 5-6.5 x 3.5-4 µm, subcylindrical up to cylindrical, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 15-28 x 4-5 µm, suburniform with one to two constriction and a basal clamp each, sometimes basidial repetition present.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, up to 4 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- Capitate cystidia with apical exsudat and one basal clamp each, 13-50 x 4-5 µm. In the herbarium specimens the apical exsudat is not soluble in 5% KOH solution. The cystidia arise from the hymenium and subhymenium.
- Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. Hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled, densely hyphal branching. Hyphae of the subhymenium may be strongly incrusted with crystals, which are not soluble in 5% KOH solution.
- Aculei:
- The hyphae of the aculei run slightly sinuos and their endings are obtus or subulate.
Habitate and substrate:
Mainly on deciduous wood: Corylus, Populus, Fagus, Nothofagus, Quercus. Seldom on conifers: Picea, Abies.
Biogeography:
There are records from all continents exept Australia. Rick (1959) notes several specimens from Brazil. Wu (1990) illustrates a specimen from Taiwan.
Remarks:
H. rimosissima is well characterised by the combination of very small aculei and capitate cystidia with exsudat. The hyphal endings of the aculei vary in morphology (obtus or subulate). In the contrary to H. pruni H. rimosissima always has capitate cystidia with droplets of exsudat.
