E. Langer 1992, Trans. Mycol. Soc. Japan 33(3): 404.
Holotype: Taiwan, Nantou Prov., Lien-Hua-Chi near Hua Lien, ca. 700 m alt., on white-rotten wood, leg. E. Langer, G. Langer, F. Oberwinkler, 23.03.1989, FO 40667, Herbarium F. Oberwinkler. Isotypi in Herbaria GB, TAI.

Taiwan, Nantou Prov., Hui-Sun near Puli, ca. 600-800 m alt., on white-rotten wood, leg. E. Langer, G. Langer, F. Oberwinkler, 05.04.1989, FO 40985, Herbarium F. Oberwinkler.
Select illustration:
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, odontioid, white to yellowish, without aculei ca. 150 µm thick, aculei ca. 50 µm high.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 4.5-5 x 3.5-4 µm, wide ellipsoid, thin-walled, inamyloid, smooth, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 15-17 x 4-5 µm, basal slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 µm), suburniform with one basal clamp each.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, 3µm long.
- Cystidia:
- Tubular tramacystidia, thick-walled, apical thin-walled and slightly capitate. In the subiculum of the fruit body trama cystidia running parallely, in the apex of the aculei strongly sinuouse.
- Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. All hyphae thick-walled (up to 1 µm), diameter 2,5-4 µm. Subhymenial hyphae highly branched. Basal hyphae loosely intervoven. Hyphal branching by outgrowing of clamps or by subseptal outgrowing. All hyphae in a water mounted slides strong incrusted with crystals, which are soluble in 5% KOH solution.
- Aculei:
- The aculei are completely built up by tubular tramacystidia. In the tops of the aculei the trama cystiadia are able to form primary septa, which may grow out again. The transition from branching tramacystidia to a pseudodimitic hyphal system is obvious in this case.
Habitate and substrate:
Forest in the mountains with high amount of rain fall. On decaying deciduous and coniferous wood, e.g. Schefflera, Abies, Tsuga.
Biogeography:
There are some specimens from Taiwan and one specimen from La Gomera (Canaries).
Remarks:
Sinuous or snake-like twisted hyphae in the aculei are also present in e.g. H. capitata, H. candidissima and H. pruni. H. serpentiformis could be distinguished from them by two characters: The aculei are built by tick-walled tramacystidia in combination with the complete absence of hymenial cystidia.
It is not possible to make interpretations on distribution because two hitherto known records (La Gomera and Taiwan) are too few. But it is obvious that the species is at least well distributed in mountain areas in Taiwan.
