H. aff. spathulata, FO 42367 from Taiwan
Synonyms:
- = Hydnum spathulatum Fr. 1821, Syst. Mycol. I, p. 423.
- Neotype designated by E. Langer 1994, Bibl. Mycol 154: 213. Sweden, Upland, Tierp sn., island Prästö in the river Dalälv, on deciduos wood, leg. L. Romell, 17.08.1913, in Herb. L. Romell Nr. 4981, Herbarium S.
- = Hyphodontia spathulata (Schrad.: Fr.) Gilb. in Petersen 1971, Evol. higher Basidiom., p. 300.
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, odontioid up to irpicoid, margin thinning out, often lighter coloured then the rest of the basidiocarp, aculei up to 2 mm long, very dense, cylindrical to spathulate, also denticulate (with teeth-like outgrowings), apically fimbriate, growing positively geotropical.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 4-5.5 x 3-4 µm, ellipsoid, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 12-23 x 4-5 µm, suburniform, with one to two constriction and one basal clamp each, sometimes basidial repetition.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, up to 3,5 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- 1. capitate cystidia with one basal clamp, 20-50 x 4-5 µm, apical with droplets of exsudat. The exsudat from the herbarium specimens is not soluble 5% KOH solution. The cystidia arise from the hymenium or subhymenium.
- 2. moniliform cystidia (constricted like a string of pearls), apical tapering. 3% Pholoxin solution dyes their content more then in the surrounding hyphae. The cystidia arise from the subhymenium with one basal clamp each.
- Clamps:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitc. Basal and subicular hyphae 2-3.5 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to slightly thick-walled (up to 5 µm), more or less strongly encrusted with needle-like crystals, which are not soluble in 5% KOH solution. In basal parts of the basidiocarp there are often accumulations of rough, polyedric crystals. Subhymenial hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled, not incrusted. In the hymenium and suhymenium lots of collapsed, empty basidia are present. Hyphal branching by subseptal outgrowing or outgrowing of clamps.
- Aculei:
- The hyphae of the aculei are thin-walled and run parallel. Hyphal ends are tapering.
Habitate and substrate:
Mainly on decayed coniferous wood: Picea, Tsuga, Pinus. Seldom on deciduous wood.
Biogeography:
For H. spathulata Eriksson & Ryvarden (1976) note that it is very abundant in Central Europe. In Northern Europa this species nevertheless is rare. Further specimens are from the GUS (Eriksson & Ryvarden 1976), from North Amerika (Miller 1934), the Canaries (Rodriguez-Armas 1992) and Taiwan. The investigated specimens and reliable records in the literature point to a northern hemispherical distribution.
Remarks:
H. spathulata is good charatericed by its odontioid to irpicoid hymenium and the perl-string-like, constricted (moniliform) cystidia. This cystidial type is less conspicious in H. spathulata than in other Hyphodontia species having the same type, like e.g. H. mollis.
Capitate ventricose cystidia present
Aculei very small, at most 1 mm long................H. breviseta
Aculei up to 2 mm long, cylindrical to spathulate...H. spathulata
Capitate ventricose cystidia not present..............H. mollis
