Synonyms:

= Corticium subalutaceum Karst. 1883, Medd. Soc. Fauna Flora Fenn. 9: 65.
= Tubulicium subalutaceum (Karst.) G.H. Cunn. 1963, N. Z. Dep. sci. industr. Res. Bull. 145: 140.
Lectotype: Finnland, Tavastia, Tammela, Mustiala, on a Pinus branch, leg. P.A. Karsten, Sept. 1872, in Herb. P.A. Karsten, Herbarium H.
= Hyphodontia intermedia (Bourd. & Galz.) Parm. 1968, Consp. Syst. Cortic., p. 125.
= Odontia intermedia Bourd. & Galz. 1927, Hym. de France, S. 423.
Holotype: France, La Hte Marne, Andelot, leg. L. Maire, No. 1264, Herb. Bourdot No. 28326, Herbarium UPS.

Macromorphology:

Resupinate, smooth up to slightly verrucose , white up to ochraceous, margin thinning out, up to ca. 500 µm thick, warts up to 150 µm high, apically fimbriate by protuding trama cystidia. Colour photo in Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1986), picture No. 86.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
6-8 x 1.5-2.5 µm, allantoid, smooth thin-walled, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
10-23 x 3-5 µm, compact suburniform with one to two constrictions and one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, up to 3 µm long.
Cystida:
Tubular tramacystidia, up to ca. 200 µm long, 5-8 µm in diameter, thick-walled (up to 2 µm), apical thin-walled, apex obtus. The cystidia arise from the subicular hyphae and may be clustered in groups.
Clamps:
All primary septa with one clamp each.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal hyphae 2-4 µm in diameter, thin-walled up to thick-walled (< 1 µm). Subhymenial hyphae 2-3 µm in diameter, thin-walled, heavily branched. Because there are many dead and empty hyphae present the hyphal context is very hard to analyze. Hyphal branching by subseptal outgrowing or outgrowing of the clamps.

Habitate and substrate:

Mainly on decaying coniferous wood: Picea, Abies, Pinus, Pseudotsuga. Deciduous wood: Betula, Fagus, Quercus, Alnus, Nothofagus.

Biogeography:

The records point to a world wide distribution. (Cunningham 1963) reports it also from Australia and New Zealand.

Remarks:

Bourdot & Galzin (1928) described Odontia intermedia with a ca. 500 µm thick basidiocarp, which micromorphologicaly can not be distinguished from H. subalutacea sensu Karsten. H. subalutacea on the contrary to O. intermedia only has quite thin fruit bodies (100-150 µm). Because of this H. intermedia and H. subalutacea are regarded as synonyms here. Similar species with narrow allantoid spores could be distinguished by the size of their spores and the morphology of the surface of their hymenium:
Hymenium smooth
Spores wider than 2-2.5 µm..........H. cineracea
Spores more narrow than 2 µm.........H. altaica
Hymenium obviously warzig or odontioid
  Hymenium obviously odontioid.........H. floccosa
  Hymenium warzig......................H. subalutacea
