Hyphodontia subglobosa

WU 1990
Acta Bot. Fenn. 142: 106.

Holotype: Taiwan, Taichung, Tunghai University, on a trunk of Acacia confusa, leg. S.H. Wu, 05.08.1989, No. Wu 890805-2, Herbarium TAI.

Macromorphology:

Resupinate, odontioid up to irpicoid, white, margin thinning out, without aculei up to ca. 500 µm thick, aculei up to 1 mm long, apical fimbriate, growing positively geotropical.

Micromorphology:

Spores:
4-5 x 3-4 µm, broad ellipsoid to subglobose, thin-walled, smoot, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
Basidia:
7-14 x 4-5.5 µm, clavate up to slightly suburniform, with one constriction and one basal clamp each.
Sterigmata:
Four, up to 3 µm long.
Clamps:
none
Cystidia:
Tubular tramacystidia, 5-11 µm in diameter, up to ca. 200 µm long, thick-walled (up to 1 µm), apical thin-walled. They arise from the subiculum.
Hyphae:
Hyphal system monomitic. Basal and subicular hyphae 3-5 µm in diameter, thick-walled (up to 1 µm), subhymenial hyphae 3-5 µm in diameter, thin-walled.
Aculei:
The centre of the aculei are built of tubulare tramacystidia and generative hyphae. The generatic hyphae in the top of the aculei are running parallel. They are 3-5 µm in diameter, thin-walled and often septated (cell length 13-25 µm).

Habitate and substrate:

Hitherto only found in the subtropical Taiwan on Acacia.

Biogeography:

Taiwan.

Remarks:

Only a few Hyphodontia species with tubulare, thick-walled trama cystidia lack clamps. The distinction of these species is easily done. They are distinguished by the morphology of their basidia and spores.
Basidia four spored
  Spores ellipsoid.......H. tetraspora
  Spores subglobose......H. subglobosa
Basidia two spored.......H. efibulata
