Hyphodontia wrightii
Hjortst. et Ryv. 1986, Mycotaxon 25(2): 560.
Holotype: Argentina, Prov. Missiones, Iguazu National Park, Cataratas de Iguazu, leg. L. Ryvarden, 01.-05.03.1982, LR 19636, Herbarium O.
Select illustration:
Macromorphology:
Resupinate, odontioid, cream-coloured, without aculei up to ca. 100 µm thick, aculei up to ca. 100 µm high.
Micromorphology:
- Spores:
- 4.5-5.5 x 2.5-3 µm, ellipsoid up to cylindrical, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, with one droplet each.
- Basidia:
- 19-29 x 3-4 µm, slender suburniform with one to several constrictions and one basal clamp each, often basidial repetition.
- Sterigmata:
- Four, 3-4 µm long.
- Cystidia:
- Lagenocystidia, 25-51 µm long, up to 5 µm in diameter, young thin-walled, mature thick-walled (up to 1 µm) and then apical with neadle-like crystals cap, which is not soluble in 5% KOH solution. The lagenocystidia are produced in the hymenium, and are clustered in groups.
- Clampes:
- All primary septa with one clamp each.
- Hyphae:
- Hyphal system monomitic. Basal, subiculare and subhymenial hyphae 2-3 µm in diameter, thin-walled, basal hyphae loosely interwoven, in the subiculum densely interwoven. Hyphae in the center of the aculei 2-4 µm in diameter, slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 µm). Hyphal branching by outgrowing of the clamps or subseptal outgrowing.
- Aculei:
- Lagenocystidia are clustered in groups and built together with generative, thin-walled hyphae the aculei.
Habitate and substrate:
No information available.
Biogeography:
The only specimen hitherto known was found in Argentina.
Remarks:
H. wrightii has lagenocytidia, which are morphologically different from the ones of H. arguta which have a needle-like tapering. The clustering of lagenocystidia in the aculei and the lack of any other cystidial types distinguish H. wrightii very good from all other species with lagenocytidia.
Septo cystidia at least 3 to more celled
Spores longer than 6 µm.........................H. propinqua
Spores shorter than 6 µm........................H. alba
No septo cystidia , or at most two cells
Capitate cystidia in the hymenium present
Hymenium smooth up slightly uneven............H. alutaria
Hymenium odontioid............................H. arguta
No capitate cystidia in the hymenium present....H. wrightii
