The German-speaking Community in Belgium is not only the smallest component of the Belgian federal state, it is also the smallest European region with legislative competence. After a turbulent history, it became a constituent state with far-reaching powers after the federalisation of Belgium. The contribution mainly deals with the internal situation in the German-speaking Community (institutions, missions, finance) and with the manifold participation and collaboration forms in various fields. Special attention goes to a unique possibility in terms of comparative law -, i.e. the competence transfer from the Walloon Region to the German-speaking Community. This article aims at making known the less-known part of the Belgian federal state.
