Valéry Giscard dEstaing, as President of the European Convention, had to manage very devergent visions for the future of Europe what was his own idea for the European Union? Was it federal, as he seemed to be of federalist (political) culture? The article tries to analyse the part of federal thinking in Giscards speeches and behaviour througout the Convention, taking into account the obligation to reach compromises with opposite political options.
